A cycle highway is readable when it has self-explaining infrastructure by means of three types of readability elements:

• horizontal elements: f.i. a continuous blue or red asphalt, a coloured line, markings on the pavement,...
• vertical elements: f.i. the different pieces of infrastructure are glued together with signposts (f.i. wayfinding elements), lighting,. metrolines,...
• landscape elements:  a route alignment that can be easily understood and followed (f.i. along a waterway, railways,...). 

An optimal readability is achieved when the infrastructural aspect of readability is combined with the awareness aspect of readability.
