The Comber Greenway (also part of the national cycling route 99) is a 11 km traffic-free section of the National Cycle Network that runs along the old Belfast-Comber railway line. The route alignment improves the infrastructural readability of the cycle path. The attractive cycle path starts in east Belfast and finishes at Comber in County Down.
The comber greenway is not branded as part of a cycle highway network. It has its own name and is branded as a route for cyclists and pedestrians.
If this functional connection needs to promoted as a cycle highway, then it is recommended to opt for a broader network-brand for cycle highways. See the trial & error HST-route (old branding strategy of the F3 cycle highway).
- A strong route-identity can improve the local brand awareness.
- A connection is made with the concept of greenways.
- The Comber Greenway is also part of a network-brand on state level: the national cycling network.
- If the functional connection is seen as a cycle highway, it is recommended to opt for a network-brand (see CHIPS recommendations)
